Becoming Catholic (RCIA)
Exploring faith. Asking questions. Taking the next step—at your own pace.
If you are not a Catholic but would like to learn more about the Catholic faith—and perhaps explore the possibility of being baptised or received into the Church—we warmly invite you to join our RCIA programme. We are also very happy to welcome returning Catholics who wish to reconnect with their faith.
What is RCIA?
If you are not a Catholic but would like to learn more about the Catholic faith—and perhaps explore the possibility of being baptised or received into the Church—we warmly invite you to join our RCIA programme.
This programme runs from September to June and provides an opportunity to deepen your understanding of the faith in a supportive and friendly environment. Sessions are held on Tuesday evenings in the Parish House and are coordinated by Bronagh Power and Colette Dempsey (669 5447), together with Fr Jock.
We would be delighted to accompany you on this journey of faith, and also to welcome back ‘returning Catholics’.

Frequently Asked Questions
I’m interested in the Catholic faith, but I’m not sure yet. Where do I start?
The best way to start is simply to come and see! You are always welcome to join us for Sunday Mass (9:30 am) – or the Saturday Vigil (6.30pm Saturday) to experience the liturgy and meet the community. If you’d like a quiet chat first, feel free to catch Fr. Jock, Fr Shaiju or Deacon Eddie after Mass or contact the Parish Office. We are a “no-pressure” community; we’re just here to walk with you.
What is RCIA ?
RCIA stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. It is a journey of discovery where we explore the teachings of Jesus, the beauty of the Sacraments, and the history of the Church. At St John’s, these sessions are informal, friendly, and involve good conversation.
I was baptized in another Christian denomination. Do I need to be baptized again?
No. The Catholic Church recognizes all valid Christian baptisms. If you are already baptized, your journey focuses on being “Received into Full Communion” through the Sacraments of Confirmation and the Eucharist.
How long does the process take?
There is no “ticking clock.” Typically, our group meets from autumn through to the Easter Vigil, which is the beautiful nighttime service where new members are welcomed into the Church. It then continues for another 50 days till the Feast of Pentecost. However, everyone’s spiritual journey is unique, and we move at a pace that feels right for you.
Can I still attend Mass if I’m not Catholic?
Absolutely! We love having visitors. You are welcome to join in the prayers, the singing, and the social time afterward. During Communion, if you aren’t yet Catholic, you are invited to come forward with one arm crossed over your chest to receive a blessing from the priest.
What if I have a “messy” life or a difficult past?
You’ll fit right in! Whether you’ve been away from God for years or have complicated life circumstances (like most of us!) or feel you don’t know the Bible or the teaching of the Church well enough—you are welcome. God meets us exactly where we are.
Is there a cost involved?
None at all.
